Amosoff studied hydroelectrical engineering before becoming a physician and one of the leading cardiologists in the Soviet Union. He pioneered the extracorporeal heart-lung machine and served as chief of the clinic for cardiovascular surgery at Kiev's Institute of Thoracic Surgery.
